weaving process

I accept custom orders from individuals, architects, interior
designers, churches and corporate clients and am able to create
a unique rug or wall hanging to coordinate with any interior
setting.  Constructed as durable floor rugs, their decorative
quality makes them equally appropriate as wall hangings.
Each hand-woven rug / wall hanging is made with a linen warp
(threads running vertically) and wool or cotton weft threads
running horizontally).  I employ a variety of traditional weft-faced
rug weaving techniques including plain weave, twill, tapestry
and 3-end block weave with shaft-switching. I also hand dye
some of my yarns and use a weft ikat resist (tie dye) method.
Peter Collingwood, internationally acclaimed Master Weaver,
invented the shaft-switching device which enables the weaver
to change the position of the some of the warp threads during
the weaving process, by switching them from one shaft to
another, with the use of cords and levers.

Hand-woven rugs and wall hangings provide a visual focus, help
soften the acoustics and are an attractive feature for any room.
Commissioning is a simple process.  Please contact me to discuss
your requirements.  Hand-woven items are made to order from the
portfolio of existing designs or to customer specifications.
Please visit the gallery page to see some examples of the designs
I have already created.
My "one off" woven designs are mainly contemporary in style
incorporating geometric shapes, graded colour blends and stripe
rhythms. Many of the designs are reversible, effectively giving
two surfaces.  Colour is an important element of my work.  I use
a broad range coloured yarns and blend several strands together,
like mixing paint, to achieve the desired effect.  Inspiration for new
designs comes from everywhere - especially ancient symbols,
ethnic textiles and nature.
Mick, my wonderful boyfriend,
is an engineer, a great support
and a good weaver too.
Generally, rugs / wall hangings are made in two main sizes:
3 ft x 5 ft (92 cm x 152 cm) and 4 ft x 6 ft (122 cm x 183 cm).
The maximum weaving width is 4 feet (122 cm) and the
length is limited to 12 feet (366 cm).  Larger items can be
made by weaving in strips and joining the pieces together.
The cost is from £30 ($55) per square foot depending on the
size, complexity of the design and weaving technique used.
Should you be interested in ordering an individually
designed hand-woven rug or wall hanging and would
like to further discuss the possibility, or if you have any
questions, please contact me.
